IMOVIE PROJECT: FEMINISM
By Emily Horvat and Michelle Haapala
ARTIST STATEMENT
This educational short film of
feminism portrays our ideas and opinions on not only being a woman, but also on
how women are treated in society. We explore this concept of feminism in a
personal way that displays both positive and negative aspects of the role of
women in American society. We explore how we view feminism as well as the views
of other individuals in our community. Emily and I decided to take a hands-on
approach to creating this video by having the individuals write a word or
phrase that they associate with feminism. This allowed for other perspective to
be represented in our film, which worked well with our wish to include a wide
variety of women and opinions. This created more of a personal connotation to
the film, which we wanted to achieve. The audience is very important in the
viewing process of a movie, and by establishing these relationships on the
screen, we hope the audience relates and grabs a hold of our concepts through
these emotions.
We wanted to portray feelings that
build up to a reality of how women are portrayed and stereotyped in society.
This build up from positive to negative draws the viewer into a perspective
from a woman’s point of view. How have these stereotypes evolved? How have women
been targeted in society through out history? We explore a modern way of
viewing these ideas and use strong, specific, women examples to portray this
concept.
While creating this piece, we took into
account all the technical strategies and concepts that could aid in our idea.
For example, the effects and transitions all contribute to the abrupt and
dramatic ending. The film has an emotional and riveting feeling that is aided
by the quick and stark changes in scene. The gradual change of a positive
connotation to a negative connotation is the main experience we wanted the
audience to get out of the movie. This feeling is the most effective on the
audience with the concept of feminism. If the viewer experiences a feeling
during a visual work, that emotion will stick with them. We wanted to use this
concept to affect the audience through strong emotional content, forcing them
to relate to their own opinion of feminism.
We believe our video is successful
in educating the public on stereotypes of women, from a women perspective. We
wanted to display a dramatic and raw form of women sharing their opinions. The
action of having the women write on a sign to display their view, allowed us to
form a relationship with them, and therefore creating a relationship with the
viewer. The public can relate easily to reality, and real individuals. This
aspect also contributes to the positive education of feminism to the community
in this film.
I think our film will portray many
ideas of feminism, women, and stereotypes. Our goal for this film is to
educate, inspire, and create perspective. We hope that through this real and
pure movie, individuals will react, and allow themselves to be vulnerable
enough to speak their minds, and act on their opinions. It is when we do this,
that we create change.
Research of 3 Artists
I have had a number of artists throughout my life who have influenced me in specific ways, whom I look to in times of despair and artistic mental brain farts. The first artist which influences me in a significant way is Julie Mehretu. Her work speaks of the importance of community, and how society can engulf an individual with pressure and stereotypes, or on the other hand, love and compassion. This world is a busy and hectic rush that we all take part in, our lives are like a blink of an eye, yet we each find our own contribution to the world. Julie's work shows this through her use of line and layers. Her appealing pieces are often ambiguous, yet speak to the audience in a specific, emotional way.
Julie was born in Ethiopia in 1970. She now lives in New York and creates large gestural paintings that often consist of as many as twenty five layers. She mostly works with the ideas of architecture, community, and mapping. She breaks these subjects up to discover the aesthetic relationships that are created. She uses acrylic paint as well as pencil, pen and ink on the layers to create depth and atmosphere.
Here is an example of her work:
Animation Project
Animation Statement
Big Idea: Relationships
Topic: Relationships with Technology
For my animation, I worked with the
big idea of relationships. I took this in a more literal direction and related
this topic to the current generation. I decided to illustrate and portray the
relationship many individuals have with technology. This relationship often
distances us from our pure, original form of relationships. This idea seems
silly and bizarre: we are forming a relationship with an item that is not
humane, and certainly cannot take the feelings we give to it and return them.
By forming this relationship with technology, we are creating a negative
relationship with our friends, family, and acquaintances. We are instead becoming
socially incapable of confrontation and communication between human beings. I
illustrated an anonymous character that is fully involved in technology. When
this gadget fails him he is forced to confront reality and put himself into a
realm that is became unfamiliar with. He soon learns that this is not as easy
as he thought, and sees the significance of concrete, positive
relationships. Hopefully this short
animation will advocate for personal relationships, and will stress the dangers
of too much technology in our present community. I hope the audience sees how
our generation needs to become a little less technologically connected and a
little more personally connected.
The character travels on a short,
but meaningful journey from a material relationship, to an attempt at a
personal, humane, relationship. The character is abruptly tested when the music
device he is listening to breaks. He is forced to recognize the ragged, nature
sounds of the world. Because he had turned away from personal relationships due
to his technological relationship, the character is unable to identify with
other characters, and finds it quite difficult to interact with others. This
leads to his feelings of despair, loneliness, and social awkwardness. This
journey shows the audience the importance of social skills, and personal
relationships in today’s world and community. Without these basic skills, one
becomes stuck in virtual realm, which questions the reality of human
relationships. This animation touches on this idea through a narrative movement
of pictures and drawings.
Towards the end of the animation,
the character finds peace in nature and begins to reconnect with the real,
tactile world. Once he begins to experience this relationship of self to
nature, he is then able to open up to other individuals. He finds this natural
relationship first, then begins to create a personal, humane relationship with
someone who looks to have come from the same experiences as he. This animation
represents this generation of individuals who are beginning to loose a sense of
personal relationship and social awareness/ action. We are forced into a
technology-filled world, and we are soon losing our skills of confrontation and
direct communication. This worries me especially in the scheme of art, and how
we will apply it in our own classrooms. Computers and technology have many many
positive aspects, but we are slowly losing the skills to interact with each
other. Forming relationships is a significant part of our lives as humans, and
if this were to ever completely disappear, I feel our world would be in great
disarray.
TOPIC: CAT SOUP short animation film
This animation is a gloomy, deep animation that is rich in image and sounds, but lacks in speaking. It is up to the viewer to conclude a meaning out of this creation. To me, the animation spoke of a journey with an overall controller of the earth. Two cats are manipulated during this path they take homeward. It has a childlike and fantastical quality which allows artificial ideas to flow. It is a blunt way to describe our journeys as humans on this earth. No matter what we do, death is inevitable, and an end to everything comes at one point. The film has a somewhat negative connotation to it, which evokes feelings of desperation, sadness, and fear.
To emphasize this fantastical and magical big idea, the creator uses specific color schemes, repetition, sound effects, orientation facial expressions etc. It draws the viewer inward through these strategies, which is why animation can be so effective. In terms of art education, animation can help state a point, a view, a moral, a cultural idea, etc. This is a new way of advertising and taking a stance on something as an individual.
The animation showed me what is possible in creating my own work in this medium. It also gave me an idea for portraying an idea successfully with only frames of images. This film allows me to better understand what exactly is necessary for an animated short film in terms of information shared, and information that is just assumed or left to the imagination of the viewer.
POSTCARD PROJECT
BIG IDEA: RELATIONSHIPS

Relationships develop personally to
specific individuals. Because of this, the word relationship comes with many
meanings. I have chosen to explore relationships in three different ways by developing
postcards that represent relationships in different ways.
In my three postcards, I compiled
images of the places I have relationships with: my apartment, which I know
well, and my new job which is not as familiar to me. Through these postcards, I
tried to combine images from a place I know and confide in, as well as a place
that is not as comfortable to me. Exploring these relationships is visually
challenging to the viewer because it combines places and objects that relate in
a different way then we are used to seeing. This combination creates a whole
new aesthetic relationship in itself.
The first postcard explores this
idea of relationship to nature. I used the concept of repetition to create an
environment that is unusual. The fans create an idea of artificial wind. They
are a subtle yet harsh factor in the place they reside. The fans establish a
relationship with their outside environment, and begin to make the viewer
belief they really fit into the field.
The second postcard surrounds the idea
of artificial versus reality. I created a fantastical environment with symbols
that I have a close relationship with. By combining these two realms, I have
created an unnatural environment that brings into question what is fantasy and
what is reality.
The third postcard portrays
concealment and revealing of text. This image focuses on the idea of everyone
having relationships, weather those are positive or negative. The image shows
two electric boxes side by side, and the text reads “everyone can relate”. The
relationship between the too electric boxes is purely aesthetic, but almost
suggests something more humane and conceptual. The way they are lined up next
to each other makes the viewer wonder and expand on the relationship of this
image. The text speaks directly to the viewer, and evokes a personal experience
by the words “everyone can relate”. The piece relates to an individual specifically, and has a
meaning that only they can understand.
Overall, relationships are loaded
subject areas, which can be purely conceptual or purely aesthetic. Both can be
formed through objects of comfort, or discomfort, natural or artificial,
personal or impersonal. Relationships are important parts of our lives as
humans, and art is a positive alley to portray this concept.
TOPIC: CREATIVITY AND ART EDUCATION
What is creativity?
How can creativity be taught?
Why creativity NOW? Why do you think creativity is especially important now?
How can technology (digitally made) be used to implement creativity and learning through visual art?
I believe creativity is an outlet for one's experiences, feelings, views, etc. Creativity isn't defined, but rather, it is discovered. I think that not all people embrace their creativity, but others choose to explore it through many ways. Creativity is such an expansive subject, that it really cannot be put into one category. We all use expression in ways specific to our own definition of creativity. For example, some create for themselves, some create for others, some use creation to help others, and some create for no reason at all. I believe creativity is such a positive link in which to express and convey, and individuals should continue to discover their thoughts visually through creating.
In terms of education of creativity, I think it is up to the individual to discover this act of conveying an idea. Creativity cannot be specifically taught, but can be nurtured and ignited by an instructor, an experience, a feeling, or another piece of art. So, in my opinion, the individual has to gain the yearning to create. This feeling of wanting to express something, is how I was "taught creativity". Similar to most things in life, first, one has to want it, second, one has to become dedicated and passionate in creating, and third, the individual must go and create. This sequence is how I believe one can be "taught" creativity.
I think the real question is WHY NOT NOW? Anytime is the right time to create. In an ever-evolving world and community, it is important to contribute ideas and opinions through visual means. Creation spurs positive movements and changes with in a community. It also strengthens societies through these visual opinions and experiences. Creating and creations can have such a great impact on and individual as well as the community as a whole. We can all create at any point in time, and that creation will contribute to a better community and visual culture.
Pieces like these public installations spur movements, create feelings, and involve the community in positive ways

Creativity is very important and successful when it comes to integrating technology into a curriculum of teaching. In terms of instructing in art with technology, it is important to teach students the tactics only to a certain point. If you allow them to discover and create on their own, they will acquire skills of problem solving and critical thinking. This path of discovery through technology also leads to self- confidence and self- direction in the individual. If an instructor can find a balance between digital art and hands-on art, the art classroom will be most successful.

I totally agree that creativity cannot be taught. Amen Meesh. We have to try to really push our little babies to be the best they can be. Cuz they WILL be awesome!
ReplyDeleteHi, Michelle. How are you? Let's talk about the first one. I like the idea of the fans in a field. Humans are starting to coexist with nature more and these fans are a nice way of making something more connected to humans than those giant fans we see on wind farms. There is something to be desired technically, past the great job you did cutting and pasting, that was done really well. They stand out a little much compared to the farm atmosphere, especially the ones that just stop at the ground.
ReplyDeleteThere's something about the second one that's just too much, but in a good way. Though the animal figures stand out they do look like they are balancing on the railing and the cutting and pasting job is very nice. Also having the background have that pattern but not the figures makes them stand out even more.
I actually can't read the words in the third one.
Big Idea: Relationships
ReplyDeleteI am really interested in the fact that you chose to combine something you have a strong relationship with and something you have a weak relationship with. This combination is interesting due to the relationship you create between these two things.
I was having a difficult time with your third postcard because I couldn't really see the text and it just looked like a photograph that didn't seem to fit with the idea.
I am most interested in your first postcard. The juxtaposition of the fans in the field leads to a lot of different thoughts and topics to be discussed. The only issue I have with it is that I do not necessarily get the relationship concept from it on its own.
You first postcard I thought more about industry and how we can get energy from wind farms. I am not sure what to say about your second one... very odd. However, you do get a sense of relationship in this postcard. On the other had, it might be a little much in your face. I need a moment to get to that idea. You last one is great. The two green electrical boxes are personified. I think of them being a couple or in a relationship with each other.
ReplyDeletebig idea= relationships
ReplyDeletei think the first postcard works really well to portray your idea of the relationship that people have with nature.i enjoy your craft as well you have a nice crisp technique with photoshop.
one critique i have is the third postcard because or the wording... i think the idea of the two boxes having a relationship is great but i could hardly find the saying in the grass.
You chose an interesting way to think about your big idea, relationships. The fact that you chose to evaluate "relationship" in a different way in each postcard makes it a little challenging to figure out your main idea though. If you could find a way to connect these images somehow, I think that it would help the viewer to understand your intended message.
ReplyDeleteHey Michelle! You have based your project on the big idea of relationships, using images of your apartment and your workplace. I think the first image is working really well to highlight the relationship between the industrial and the natural, and how they each rely on the other. The second image really relates your two worlds, and I think a lot of viewers would be able to identify with the stuffed animals and their familiarity. From a technical standpoint, the two stuffed animals look a little bit like they are pasted there, so adding some shadow to the bar they are sitting on could help that. The third image is really interesting in the relationships within the image itself, and I think the text you have chosen is appropriate, especially in relation to your other images, because I think a lot of people will be able to relate to the stuffed animal picture. Yet, I think the text could stand out a little more from the grass, just because it is hard to read and find.
ReplyDeleteYour technological proficiency is really nice. Everything is seamed together really well, nothing seems to stick out as a stark copy and paste.
ReplyDeleteYour Big Idea seems a little vague to me though, especially in your first postcard. After reading your statement I understand it a little better, but it would be nice if the images gave a better indication of what the Big Idea is on their own.
Happy Friday!!
Meeesh, your first postcard is very good repetitive wise, not sure if the concept of relationships is really conveyed in this image. The second one definitely portrays relationships. The stuffed animals connect to each other in their own relationship, they connect to you because we can tell that they are yours, and they all have a much different meaning when they are placed in front of Eberhard. The third image has a relationship in a much different way because the two meter/electrical boxes are connected to each other. Both the 2nd and 3rd image objects have been personified to create new relationships and I think they worked out very well. Your third image mask "words" are very hard to see, and I'm not sure if everyone can relate, but perhaps to you they can. Okay. i'm done. Love you =)
ReplyDeleteI like the fans as a boundary between us and the field beyond, it is an interesting contrast.
ReplyDeleteThe animals could be incorporated in a more meaningful way. Taking a comfortable place and interjecting it into harsh environment could be better accomplished with further incorporation and in a less in your face way.
The third image is beautiful, and your idea of personifying the electrical boxes is a good one. Yet how are the forming a relationship, and how could we push that relationship. What ties them together? How do they relate together?
Your first postcard is the most visually interesting and makes interest in the relationship between the fans and the field which they are placed. The second postcard does play with the idea of these two animals and the environment they were placed but doesn’t push me too much beyond conceptually. I like the image for the third postcard and the relationships in the image, and although I wish the text was a little more visible, the text gives me ideas about the play between these two manmade things and the nature they were placed, which is very thought provoking.
ReplyDeleteYour postcards are all really interesting images!
ReplyDeleteFor the first one, I think it could have been made more visually interesting by placing the fans throughout the field instead of in a line towards the front. The contrast between the natural and man-made was nice though.
The second postcard was good but I did not get the idea of relationships from it. I think the image would work if you somehow emphasized your big idea more.
The third postcard was the most effective, but it is difficult to read the text. The statement of the text definitely related to your big idea and created interesting connections when you placed it in that location.
Overall, the images were good individually, but they could use more emphasis on the big idea as a whole.
I thought the drawing on real-life photos was really interesting! But I did not understand who the characters were or what was going on. I think if you were to add more details about the characters and the story or the context would help. I also think the sound effect you used for walking was a little distracting.
ReplyDeleteOverall, I would give this a 2/4 because the animation was unique and interesting, but the theme was very vague and did not seem to flow as well as it could.
meesh, your animation little dude is adorable as always. i think him being placed on the different backgrounds worked really well. your big idea is definitely portrayed through the relationships. It didn't really seem like relationships with technology, but through relationships with others. I know you got really frustrated at the end with this, as did most of us, but FEAR NOT, tragedy has not struck as gramps said...haha it turned out great. All the different sound effects worked really well with the movie.
ReplyDeleteI really like how your animation turned out. I was really able to grasp your concept in the animation, but it did take me until the end to understand it fully. Your sound selections were very effective. They seemed to fit really well with the story-line.
ReplyDeleteI was also interested in the fact that you used real pictures in the background instead of drawing something yourself. I really enjoyed this aspect of your piece because it seemed like you were one of the few to do this. However, it resulted in the story being more realistic and interested because it related to things I was familiar with.
3 thumbs
Michelle,
ReplyDeleteI thought you contrasted the real images with the animated guy really well, and while it was an interesting technique, I'm not sure I grasped the conceptual portion of your animation as well. It seemed very ambiguous to me, and so maybe a little more detail or smoother transitions would work better - something so that I can understand the purpose of the animated figures in the realistic space.
Hi Michele! How's stuff and things?
ReplyDeleteSo let's talk about this. I like that you went for something more grand and longer than the required time. Hell, thrice as long. I like the animation being incorporated with photography to give a sense of scenery, very clever use of that. The characters were fun and unique and I enjoyed their animation. Here's where it gets a little odd in understanding. After reading your description I still couldn't actually understand the meaning of the piece. In fact I enjoyed it more as an abstract work in itself. The transitions of things happening are confusing and the story itself doesn't seem to be cohesive enough in the animation. Technically I enjoyed it but getting across the concept in the animation needs work. I'd give it 2/4 thumbs, but you've got something there that can be fantastic with some work.
I really enjoy your movie. I think it all turned out well. I just wish there was a little bit more of the sad portion of the video at the end. I would also work on some of your music transitions. Sometimes it is a little choppy. Otherwise, I love it!
ReplyDeleteThe video was interesting because it was different than the way others have tackled the project. I thought it was nice that you included many people. I like the ending section, but I feel like it is slightly confusing to end on that note. I feel like the negative should be at the beginning and you end on the more positive, encouraging note.
ReplyDeleteSheesh this is intense! Really makes me think about how I feel about feminism, and how much being a girl affects who I am. There are lots of different pressures that we often accept without question, but this movie challenges the viewer to think more deeply. Your use of people contributed to the meaning, and the many different shots, angles, speeds, and techniques that you used made the video interesting to watch. The ending was pretty sudden, but it left me thinking. Therefore I cant decide if I like it or not, cuz it was still effective. Overall great job! :)
ReplyDeleteI think this video is working pretty well, and the big idea is clear. Some of the technical aspects were lacking for me, just basically the music changing and not being able to read some of the signs that people were holding. But I think the goal behind it is really powerful and love that each person was writing their own word.
ReplyDeleteGonna post here about Emily and your movie! So I enjoyed it and really enjoyed the message it had, especially at the beginning. There was a bit of drop out with the music near the beginning and I actually didn't like that part at the end as much when you went toward that drastic change in music and in idea. I get that that was negative female labeling but it was a little too brutal in a way. This is all personal if you guys think you didn't go brutal enough then by all means go more brutal next time.
